What lubricant should be used on O-rings?
The solution is: Use silicone lubricant for o-rings and seals to be safe. Silicone lubricant is waterproofing and lubricating. It costs $10 for a small tube and is available at all auto parts stores. Be safe, use silicone grease on your o-rings and rubber seals in pressure washer wands, hoses and pumps.
Nitrile (Buna), Neoprene, Ethylene Propylene (EPDM Rubber), Silicone, Fluorocarbon (Viton), and PTFE (Teflon) are among the most commonly used compounds for O-rings and seals.
Silicone spray lubricant is safer to use on rubber and plastic. A silicone spray like WD-40 is excellent for rubber seals as it is safer for use on rubber and plastic, so it continues to seal correctly.
The one time you should never use silicone lube is when you're using silicone sex toys. “Like damages like,” Dr. Rowen says. “Silicone lubes will break down sex toys." Instead, opt for a water-based with a silicone sex toy or oil-based if you don't need to use any latex barrier on the toy.
High Consistency (HC) silicone is used in compression, transfer, and rubber injection, while LSR silicones are injection molded.
While you can try to get a little more life out of them by greasing them up with a pretty stiff silicone grease (typically found as o-ring grease or vacuum grease) that will likely cost more than new o-rings if you don't already have a tube (it helps improve life if applied sparingly to new o-rings.)
Do not use vaseline ! It is a petroleum product and will react negatively with the o-ring material. Use silicone.
Silicone grease is commonly used for lubricating and preserving many types of rubber parts, such as O-rings, without swelling or softening the rubber, but is contraindicated for silicone rubber due to these factors. It functions well as a corrosion inhibitor and lubricant on non-metal-metal contact areas.
WD-40 Specialist® Silicone Lubricant safely lubricates, waterproofs and protects metal and non-metal surfaces such as rubber, plastic and vinyl.
Berryman Professional Silicone Spray is an excellent lubrication, waterproofing, and corrosion protection product for most surfaces including metal, wood, rubber, and plastic.
Does silicone spray damage metal?
One of those potential problems occurs when silicone molecules land on unpainted metal surfaces, which can later cause “fisheyes” or craters in car paint after it's applied.
Silicone spray lubricant is suitable for metal, plastic, rubber, vinyl, wood, nylon and many other materials. Most quality silicone lubricants, including CRC 808 Silicone, are designed to respond well to extreme weather conditions, including extreme heat and freezing conditions.

O-rings must be stored below 100° F (38° C). Like food items, colder temperatures mean better preservation. But before installation, O-rings must be brought back to room temperature to remain flexible. Humidity must be monitored carefully as well, as dry environments will affect the rubber.
Lubrication of O-rings is extremely important. The greatest benefit of using a lubricant is typically obtained during installation. Using a lubricant is going to decrease the surface friction of the O-ring helping to prevent abrasion, pinching or cutting of the O-ring during installation.
No WD-40 is a petroleum-based penetrating oil silicone spray is silicone the two chemicals are not related silicone is useful in areas like door tracks and on your dresser drawers where you don't want the stench of petroleum solvent all over the place.
One of the most common uses of silicone spray on rubber parts is that of replacing car window rubber seals. To do so, simply remove the rubber with a flathead screwdriver, scrub the glue with a solvent and sand the metal.
The expected range of force needed to compress an oring 20% with a 0.070” diameter cross section (purple) that is 50 durometer is between 4.5 and 14 pounds per linear inch.
Be sure to use an appropriate glue for your O-ring material! For nitrile, a standard cyanoacrylate superglue will do the trick. My preference here is for Loctite's Power Flex superglue. It's a gel, which makes it considerably easier to apply to the end of the cord, plus it sets quickly and is very strong.
Causes of leaks
The main cause is the incorrect dimensioning of the O-ring combined with the groove dimensions. You can use our O-ring calculator to help you do this. The second cause of leaks from seals is the excessive stretching or compression of the O-ring.
Using Super Lube® Silicone O-Ring Grease during installation helps protect an O-Ring from damage by abrasion, pinching, or cutting. It also helps to seat the O-Ring properly, speeds up assembly operations, and improves automated assembly.
Why do my O-rings keep falling off?
The most common causes of O-Ring failures include: Improper gland design, allowing for too much or too little compression, not enough for seal expansion and tolerance stack-up. Incorrect O-Ring size. Incompatibility of O-Ring elastomer and environmental elements.
Any food-grade vegetable oil or food-grade silicone grease can be used to lubricate the o-ring. No petroleum products can be used."

WD-40 is great for cleaning your o-ring chain.
If you put WD-40 on o-rings, it will clean them, but it will also dry them out and eventually ruin them, especially if you do not put silicone grease on them afterward.
Thank you for contacting the WD-40 Company concerning the use of our product. WD-40 contains cleaning solutions, and for this reason we do not recommend using WD-40 first and then applying another lubricant. WD-40 can swell rubber or buna rubber gaskets when the gasket is immersed in the fluid.
As mentioned above, and unlike lithium grease, silicone lubricant is the perfect lubricant for rubber surfaces, but it is also extremely versatile, so it can be used on most other materials, including metal, plastic, wood, and even painted materials.

One of the major disadvantages of silicone rubber is its poor tear strength. This can be improved with the addition of other ingredients, but it doesn't naturally offer strength or abrasion resistance, so the application needs to be carefully assessed for the suitability of silicone as a solution.
Actually wd 40 is bad for rubber anything. Just ask any air soft gun hobbyist. They avoid it to lube their guns because it destroys rubber seals. The best option here would be a silicone based lube.
How long does silicone spray take to dry?
Q: How long does silicone spray take to dry? It normally takes just a few minutes for spray lubricants to dry but can take up to 24 hours to fully cure.
WD-40 can be used on just about everything. It is safe for metal, rubber, wood and plastic. WD-40 can be applied to painted metal surfaces without harming the paint. Polycarbonate and clear polystyrene plastic are among the few surfaces on which to avoid using a petroleum-based product like WD-40.

You should use only silicone grease lubricants to maintain the life of the O-ring and preserve the watertight properties of your case. To maintain the top level protection of your case, damaged O-rings should be replaced. To see featured replacement options and all of our Case accessories, visit our website here.
As o rings are made from synthetic rubbers such as Neoprene, nitrile, and EPDM, you can use petroleum grease to perfectly lubricate the o ring.

Elastomer and O-Ring Storage Recommendation Summary:
Store free from compression or deformation. Dry contamination free environment less than 25°C (77°F) and 75% humidity. Protect from direct sun and artificial light, UV and other radiation. Protect from ozone (generated from some electrical devices)
Silicone lubricant is a great product for lubricating rubber surfaces, protecting and extending the life of your tools and equipment, does not allow dust, dirt, oil and grime to stick and of course prevents parts from sticking and binding.
