The imbued black mask, slayer helmet, and salve amulet are enhanced so that their effects apply to Magic and Ranged as well, and imbued rings have increased stats. Imbuing an item will add an (i) to its name and will give it an "Uncharge" option.
If you want to use it earlier I'd recommend imbuing a class specific item like a druid/barb helm or necro shield or something. You can't shop/gamble those so getting a good rare one can be nice early game. I like imbuing Diadems late in the game, or boots to get run speed earlier in the game.
Best target for imbue is Tiaras (with a level 73+ character), and Diadems. Not worth it to imbue white shako. Imbue only circlet, coronet, tiara and diadem only with very high level char. Save imbues until level 90+ and use on Circlets, Tiaras or Diadems.

Despite popular belief, a non-socketed Wirt's Leg can be imbued (see Tools of the Trade). Also, Wirt's Leg cannot be used to craft runewords.
Knowing when to use the imbue ability can be tricky. It's safest to wait until the character is at a high level or has reached their maximum level. If players choose to imbue items early, it's best to do it with a class item.
Imbuing Ethereals is one of the best things you can do with that quest. Basically there seem three good options to imbue. 1. circlets and their higher variants (because they can get very high mods) but those can be gambled too.
Best thing to imbue for a necy is probably boots, belt or gloves depending on what you have found/not found. As for offhand your best option is to make a rhyme out of a shrunken head that has good mods. If you can find a +3 skelly. +3 mastery head and put rhyme in it, your set for a while.
You can only use Imbue once per difficulty level.
The cow king in hell mode has about a 1 in 95 chance to drop the Shako base type item that is in hell difficulty or about a 1 in 300 chance of dropping that in nightmare difficulty.
Is a Shako worth an IST?
It's not worth that much, you'll never get Ist for Shako. If the def is 130+ it's about Um/Mal. He's wrong, medium shako is worth slightly more than ist.
Besides its bonuses to skills, life, mana and damage reduction, Harlequin Crest (often referred to by the community as simply "Shako") also bestows a very high boost to magic find, which can be boosted by socketing the helmet with an Ist Rune or Perfect Topaz.

To Imbue an item you need: Use an Imbuing Shrine on the item you want to imbue. First part of the Forgotten Knowledge Quest to unlock the first two levels of each imbuement (for the third and more efficient level further requirements in some quest are required). However, the Cow King always spawns inside the fenced enclosure located in the secret cow level, so players who wish to avoid killing him can just avoid the enclosure altogether.
You can retrieve Wirts Leg as many times as you like, and use it as many times as you like, in any difficulty without any reprecussions except ONE. If you kill the Cow King in the cow level, on any difficulty, you will be unable to open the portal yourself to go to the cow level in that difficulty again.

Shako would be no problem for a Gul. You can get that for less. from ladder, you can get a shako for sure… and maybe 20 maras, people get it to make vex from it most of times…
