What was the first football boot?
The first pair of football boots noted in history are those made for King Henry VIII of England, who ordered a pair from his Great Wardrobe in 1526. Pre 1891 nothing was allowed to project out of the shoes worn by a footballer, a revision then lead to the use of small studs or bars and football boots were born.
The earliest evidence of this comes from Spanish cave paintings. These images date from 15,000 BC and depict a man and a woman wearing fur-lined boots made of animal skin. Images from funeral jars suggest that the people of Persia wore boots as far back as 7,000 BC.
Most boots mainly cover the foot and the ankle, while some also cover some part of the lower calf. Some boots extend up the leg, sometimes as far as the knee or even the hip. Most boots have a heel that is clearly distinguishable from the rest of the sole, even if the two are made of one piece.
